Zaphir is brought to you by a creative scientist with a jewellery obsession

Hi - I'm Cordelia - I have been described as a scientist by day and an artist by night. Sounds dramatic maybe but it's the best opener I've got!

I love playing around with sterling silver, real gold and gemstones; exploring different materials and techniques. I am a total magpie when it comes to gemstones. I am also a fairly erratic jeweller - I go through weeks of nothing followed by overwhelming inspiration to make all sorts of things. You will probably see that in my work!

The common theme is that I love using recycled metals, sustainable materials, and unusual gemstones that really draw my eye. As much as I love how resin looks I won't use it in my work as there is no need to create more plastic waste in the world. I am also not afraid to combine modern metalsmithing techniques (laser cutting, 3D printing etc) with traditional methods to create unusual combinations.

My scientific background is pretty diverse; combining microbiology, nanomaterials and environmental monitoring; and so when it comes to jewellery making I love to explore organic forms and devise how I can utilise new methods to achieve interesting textures, as well as respecting the metal crystalline structure to make pieces extra robust and hard-wearing.

Recently, I have been particularly inspired by the spring leaves in my garden, and have tried to capture the beautiful forms and textures in silver. I will make a series of leaves and then look at each one carefully to decide whether or not to embellish it with gemstones or leave it 'au naturel'.

I have been creating handmade jewellery for around 20 years but have only recently set up a dedicated workbench at my home in Oxfordshire, where I create all my pieces as a creative distraction from my hectic dayjob. When you choose my pieces you invest in a piece of my creative journey. This means the world to me and so I make sure each piece is designed to be pleasurable to wear and last you for many years to come.
